DARRYL "AWESOME" OWENS
Dance music runs through his veins, and providing information on new music is important to him, that shows through his website. His musical formats in Genre range from House to Progressive, R&B to Hip Hop to Dance Hall. This directly reflects his years while he grew up listening to music that his father played play at home. His dad was a collector of records and was a small time Disc Jockey in Lounges on Chicago’s West Side in the 50‘s and 60‘s.
In 1975 at the age of 15, DJ Darryl Owens found his self lugging milk crates full of albums and 45’s to basement parties and backyard picnics in Chicago. Popularity grow fast as he started doing Christmas parties and picnics for large Corporations like Blue Cross Blue Shield and IBM in 1977. It wasn't until 1978 when he started getting serious about spinning records.
The nickname "Awesome" came around 1979 when one of his roadie’s was told at a party he was doing this The DJ was "Awesome." Back then Mobile DJ’s were very few and mix show jocks where high in demand. Staying away from radio, Darryl "Awesome" Owens capitalized on the mobile DJ market, specializing in Weddings, Family Reunions, Company picnics, and Holiday Parties. Because he grew up during a time when R&B music meant Rhythm and Blues, he continued to educate his crowd on the different styles of music.
In the mid 1980’s a new genre of music started sending waves across the world. At that time you could hear all type of music on the RADIO, from R&B to Dance Music. The genre? Rap music… That was when the industry started to change and Dance started its decline. Because of his love for Dance music he decided to devote much of his time to Dance by promoting it through a newsletter in the early 90’s called the Awesome Newsletter. When the World Wide Web became available he began putting the Newsletter, his charts, singles and albums reviews there. Since its existence it has grown to now have Reviews: Charts: Rap, R&B, House, Trance, Gospel, Jazz and Reggae, Mix Show Logs: Movie Picks: Events Calendar: and even the Awesome DJ Store where jocks can order discounted DJ Tools.
Attending conferences like WMC, DMS, DJ Expo, and IMPACT Awesome met people that wanted him to start doing mix shows. In 1995 Darryl "Awesome" Owens started mixing on WCRX, WKKC, WXAV here in Chicago and an occasional guest spot at the few stations around the country.
In 1999 was on staff for three years at DMA Magazine where he wrote reviews for DMA magazine and did some photography. Reporter for DMA, BRE, Behind The Scenes, The Pub, Billboard, Impact, K-DJ USA magazines and a few others.
